How to Style Your Mantel

Hey there all you cool cats and kittens, (LOL I didn’t just say that did I?) let’s chat today about styling your pretty mantel. If you’re lucky enough to have one (jealous) then this is your chance to shine bright with your decor. A fireplace mantel is typically a focal point in a room. It’s your opportunity to create a real wow moment! The best mantels are balanced and collected. If you style too much, then it looks cluttered. If you style too little, then it’s a bore. You’ve likely heard me say it before and i’ll say it again, less it more. This holds true even when styling your mantel. Keep it simple and don’t over complicate! Alright, it’s time to get to the good stuff…

Styling essentials to have: art, mirror, ceramics, vases, candles, greenery, books, sculptural objects, and pretty boxes.

Step 1: Bring in your anchor piece.

Start by adding your largest piece first. ie. artwork or a mirror. This is considered your anchor piece. You can either hang it just a couple inches above the mantel or lean it up against the wall. This is where your eye will travel to first!

Step 2: Incorporate a variety of heights.

You can do this by including a group of candlesticks or a beautiful vase or ceramic. These look even better when filled with greenery or flowers. This adds life, texture and colour to your mantel. You may also include a stack of books or a pretty box topped with a sculptural object.

Step 3: Create layers.

Try layering in another piece of art in front of your anchor piece. If not artwork, then perhaps an old framed family photo or some other kind of personal item. This adds interest and personality to your mantel.

Step 4: Group your items.

For the best balanced look, create 3 different groupings. Each group should consist of 1 or 3 items in it. Odd numbers are best! For example; group 1 - art and mirror, group 2 - vase with greenery, group 3 - stack of books topped with an object. Avoid using too many smaller sized items or your mantel will start to look cluttered!

Step 5: Balance.

Create visual weight on both sides of your anchor piece so that your mantel feels well balanced. For example, you could have a vase filled with greenery on one side and tall candlesticks on the opposite side. Or perhaps you place 2 of your favourite tall ceramics on either side for a real symmetrical look. Either way balance is definitely key!

I hope that this helps you with styling your own mantel. Just remember to keep in mind height, scale and texture! If you include those three details, your mantel is sure to ‘wow’!

Have a great day and stay healthy my friends!
